About

Our History

The Buxtehude Consort was founded in 2009 as a response to the financial crisis that occurred in the United States in the fall of 2008.  Artistic Director John L. Fowler – himself laid off from his day job – saw a need for more paying engagements for musicians who had found their professional calendars open, a niche for the Baroque vocal and instrumental works that we perform, and an outlet for his boundless energy and passion for Baroque music.

Since our founding in 2009, we have performed local, state and national premiers of works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Johann Christian Bach, and Francesco Provenzale, on period instruments and using historical performance practices.

What started as an informal group of musicians working for a share of whatever proceeds we could earn at the door, is now a full-fledged ensemble performing its first regular concert season.   In 2010 we incorporated as a Pennsylvania non-profit corporation, in 2011 we obtained IRS recognition as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and we have an active and engaged board of directors.  We are most often found performing at the beautiful St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill, where we are the “ensemble in residence”.
